Famous Players in 2008

Soccer Portugal is one of the undefeated teams in Europe. They have achieved many titles and have won championships in the league. Football has also made a big impact to the people of Portugal and is also a part of their lives. In today's generation some of the famous players are Portuguese and are proud to be.

Deco - Anderson Luis de Souza also known as Deco to fans is playing for Chelsea. He is a Portuguese Brazilian and also playing for the Portugal national team. He has gained various awards and given recognition as the pioneering player who won the UEFA Midfielder of the year.

Nuno Gomes - Nuno has also started his professional career at a young age. He became a professional player for Portugal and has joined his club the Benfica at 1995. He made a debut and became popular during the UEFA 2000. His playing position as a striker has given him much credit and making him famous.

Nani - This famous player has started at a young age to become a professional player. He signed a contract for Manchester United in 2005 and was a part of the Portugal national team. He has made appearance in six UEFA and has goaled once. It is a big leap for him that a young age of 21 he has already gained a lot of success in his professional career.

Roles of a Good Soccer Goalie

Soccer is not all about scoring goals but must also posses a good goalie in order to have greater chance of winning. Good goalies must have a strong leadership and confidence in order to encourage other team members to cooperate accordingly.

Goalies must be keen in analyzing and anticipating any attempts from the opponent. Another factor that can contribute to being an effective goalie is the ability to react in split seconds which is very crucial because a skilled striker can attack in the very least time unexpectedly.

A goalie should also have the proper stance or position ready to jump anytime the ball is shot for the goal. A powerful shot can be difficult to catch but with the proper technique it would be very easy for the goalie. The most common technique in catching is the "W" technique. This technique involves shaping the thumbs and fingers in a diamond like shape so as to provide the best support and helps in preventing the ball from slipping.

Dribbling a Soccer Ball

The best technique when dribbling is to use the outside of the foot where ever possible. This enables you to run normally, and so more efficiently and faster. Of course if you change direction or make a feint, then you will use the inside of your foot or the instep (the top of your foot), but practising running and dribbling with the outside of your foot is the way to go!

You need to keep the ball as close to you as possible, so that the opposition cannot get the ball. How close is that? Well it depends on where the opposition is and how fast they are. If they area is congested and there are lots of defenders, then you will need to keep the ball within touching distance at all times, that is about a foot or so away. If there is a lot of space, and you want to get forward very quickly, then keeping the ball about 5 yards away whilst running fast allow you to run faster. There are times when you are not really dribbling but running with the ball, and there will be times when it is to you advantage to "knock" the ball past the defender and chase it, especially if you are confronted with the last defender and there is a lot of space behind the defender. Can you guess what the advantages are? The knock and run turns the challenge into a foot race, so if you are faster, then you will probably have a chance to shoot. If the defender gets there first, you still have an advantage because he is facing the wrong way and you will get the chance to put pressure on him while he is facing the wrong way, and may get a throw in or even better, a corner.

The Prestigious Euro Cup

being participated by many professional leagues in different countries of the world. In line with the tournament, winning team of the UEFA Champions League is awarded with the European Cup trophy. The trophy has been battled for many years by among the best and strongest leagues in the world.

The original trophy was donated by a French sport newspaper company named L'Équipe. In 1967 the Real Madrid team was lucky enough to win and received the trophy as their permanent possession. It was based on the ruling that who ever team wins for 3 consecutive times can keep the trophy forever.

Since it started, the battle for the prestigious trophy has always been attracting many television networks to cover the huge event. All matches are broadcast in the European countries and in many other countries. The popularity of the game attracts over 200 million viewers around the world.

Adidas Predator Football Boots

The first version of the Predator was designed by ex-Liverpool striker Craig Johnson, and was created to increase the contact between football and boot on impact, to provide greater ball control. His change to the boot's outstep also allowed players to add spin and after touch. Adidas Predator Football boots were heavily marketed, and celebrity endorsements throughout the 1994 FIFA World Cup ensured that the boots received the attention they deserved. The Rapier came out the following year, and was the only of Adidas' Predators to be released outside of a World Cup or European Championship.

It is not only the distinctive style of the Adidas Predator's that has garnered them so much attention, but also the technical innovations in boot technology. The Adidas Predator Touch (released immediately prior to Euro 1996) was the first boot, for example, to have moulded studs rather than the traditional detachable studs, something that has since become an option for most football boots. The Predator Precision took the idea of different studs further by providing removable Traxion studs, with each designed for a different pitch condition.

Anyone Can Play Billiards

People of any age can learn as long as they have patience and good eye-hand coordination. If you don't get frustrated easily, before you know it, you are doing well and having fun. Then when you go to someones house for a get-together and someone says, "let's go play some pool", you can join in on the fun times and laughter to be had around the billiard table.

Its a great past time for families who love to spend time playing together. But watch out, because the kids will get hooked on the competition aspect of the game and then you'll have to teach them about being a good sport!

Watching billiards on television can be quite an educational experience in itself. If you have a table at home and you or your kids like the game, I would recommend setting your DVR or VCR to record billiards matches which will most often be shown on ESPN. These matches usually consist of professional players. Who better to watch and learn from than the best players in the world.

Different Types of Billiard Balls

Every set of billiard balls is made in the same basic way. They are all round, and made of some variation of a plastic compound. The earliest pool balls were made from wood, with ivory being the next most common material used. This stopped, however, when people realized that they were killing all the elephants off because only 8 balls could be made from the tusks of a single elephant.

Celluloid was used for awhile, but it can sometimes be harmful, so now different chip-resistant plastic compounds are used. Billiard sports experts have their favorite brand of balls to use. The untrained person, however, will probably be happy with any brand of ball. Each billiard game is played with a different size and number of balls.

Each game of billiards uses different billiard equipment. The game that uses the biggest set of balls is Carom. This game only uses three or four balls, and they are red, white, and white with a dot. There are several games that can be played with these balls, and they are usually played on pocket-less billiard tables. American billiards pool uses the next biggest ball. All of the American games use pocket games, and there are 16 of them. The first 7 balls are solid colors, and the last 8 are stripes.

The cue ball is always white. Some games use all the balls, but others use only 10. The next biggest sized game balls are used in British billiards, which is sometimes called blackball. These balls are 16 again, with half red and half yellow, and a white cue ball and a black 8 ball.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

There are many treatment options for prostate cancer available today. Basically the type of treatment will depend on the extent of the disease as well as the age and health of the patient, expected life span, personal assessment of the potential risks and side effects of the treatment.

For tumors that are still contained within the prostate itself, radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy are common treatment options. Sometimes, no treatment is given until the tumor gets bigger. For the older men who have larger risks of dying from other health problems rather than the prostate cancer, a 'watchful wait' approach is often adopted. The doctor will monitor the tumor's growth by constantly checking the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. If the cancer is not too serious, there will be no further treatment. Once the tumor grows, hormone therapy is usually given. Hormone therapy basically reduces the level of androgens. The androgen male hormone helps in the growth of prostate tumor, hence reducing the level will cause the tumor to shrink over a period of time.

NBA Rules

There are hundreds, if not thousands of different rules that govern the way that ball is played in the National Basketball Association. These rules cover everything from court size to the duties of the officials. If you're somewhat unfamiliar with the game, however, here is a brief overview of how it is played without putting too much emphasis on the details.

Each player that is in control of the ball must continually dribble the ball. Dribbling means the ball has to be in constant motion between the floor of the gym and the player's hand. In other words the ball is bounced off the floor of the court. To stop dribbling and take a few steps would be a penalty that is known as traveling. You can either carry the ball yourself while dribbling it or pass it to your teammates. That is how you move the ball down the court and towards the basket.

If the ball happens to go out of bounds whenever you're playing, the last team that touched the ball is at fault. The opposing team would gain control of the ball and throw it into their teammates from the spot at which the ball exited the court. There are several other violations, such as illegal contact which would result in a penalty.

Foul Facts

Calling fouls is very subjective, but you have to honor the referee's calls. Knowing more about fouls will help you to learn what a foul is and why it may be called. You will also learn a bit about what happens in each situation when a foul is called. This understanding can also help prevent you from taking fouls too lightly since you will understand the penalties and risks associated with getting a foul called against your team.

The definition of a foul is an attempt to disadvantage another player outside the scope of the rules. They are usually committed through physical contact. Fouls are usually called on defense, but offensive players can commit them also. As mentioned, fouls can be a source of controversy because they are completely left to the discretion of the referee. There are also different types of fouls and different rules apply to how the foul is penalized depending on the game play at the time of the foul.

There are limits placed on how many fouls a team can get during a game. Once the maximum allotted number of fouls have been made the rules change about penalties. When the team gets fouls over the maximum allowed the other team will get one to two free throws for each foul over. The exact rules vary from league to league. It is also possible for a player to be fouled out of the game, meaning when they get too many fouls they are no longer allowed to play for the remainder of the game.

The Heart of the Miami Heat

Dwyane Wade was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2003 where he quickly emerged as a solid player averaging 16 points per game with a 46% shooting average and around 4 assists per game all in his rookie year. While improving his game with outstanding performances in the playoffs he fell short to the selection of the 2004 NBA All-Rookie Team, placing his third in rookie of the year voting just behind Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James.
In the 2005-2006 Wade led his second All-Star Game with game winning performances to lead the East over the West 122-120. In the 2006 NBA playoffs, Wade resurrected his team to stardom while enduring some injuries while facing off with the Detroit Pistons. When the Miami heat faced off with the Dallas Mavericks, Wade made some of his most memorable plays to date finishing with 42 points (tying his career playoff high) and a career high of 13 rebounds. The Heat went on to win Game 6, taking the series 4-2, and Wade was presented the honorable Final MVP trophy. Dwyane Wade's career achievements include: 2006 NBA Champion and NBA Finals MVP, 4-time NBA All-Star (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), 3 Time All-NBA (2005, 2006, 2007), 2005 All-Defense, 2004 NBA All-Rookie Team,

One of the Most Important Skills in Basketball is Rebounds

If you have ever played basketball, you know that it is a very physical sport. You have to be strong, speedy and smart to be good at basketball, and there is only one way to get to that level - practice. Practice gives you the skill to outplay and outwit your opponents on the basketball court.

There are different basketball skills that need practice: shooting, running, dribbling, free throws and rebounds. A rebound is when you gain possession of the basketball after a field goal or a free throw. After a player takes a shot and misses, the ball bounces - or rebounds - back into play. Whoever can get to that rebound first gets the ball, and usually another chance to try and score.

There are two types of rebounds in basketball: offensive and defensive. Most rebounds are made by players on defense, since they are usually in a better position to get the rebound because they are situated closer to the net. Snatching a rebound is one of the best ways for the defense to gain possession of the basketball.

There are several traits that are common to great rebounders: agility, endurance, speed and strength. No matter what your physical make-up, you can train to achieve top-notch skills in all of these areas on the basketball court. If you are fast, strong and build up your stamina, you can be a successful rebounder.

Unfortunately, there is one attribute associated with good rebounding that cannot be learned in the gym or on the court: height. It is a fact of nature that the taller players have an advantage over smaller players when it comes to getting the rebound, and all of the training in the world is never going to make you taller. There are ways to make up for a deficit in height though.

Keep Yourself Injury-Free

Some of the more common injuries associated with a basketball game include sprains to the wrists, hands and fingers. Ankle sprains as well as head and facial injuries including injury to the teeth are also common. The reason for this is that falls are a natural part of this game, as is player contact, and if a basketball player lands awkwardly it could be just enough to twist the ankle. Quite often changes in direction can come without warning and must be dealt with swiftly, leaving players open to collision with other basketball players or being hit by the basketball.

Bearing these things in mind, it is always a good idea for players to have a plan of action in mind to avoid injury, when they are on the court. There are a number of measures that basketball players can take to help themselves avoid injury and stay safe on the court. Following is a practical list of advice to help basketball players stay injury free and on their feet.

The Great Problem Solver

This topic is nothing new, the conversation around why it is that whenever a city or town perceives there is a major problem with the youths in their locations (code words for too many black youths are hanging out), the most often mentioned and accomplished solution is to build a basketball court? In fact the town that I reside in has just built a number of outdoor basketball courts, albeit with no programming, it's a simple case of "If you build it they will come" The intentions are noble, but the risk of failure is also high. Because all it will take is for one terrible incident to happen and the courts will be closed down. Yet with no programming in place we leave it up to the young people to police themselves and keep everything in check (risky) The proponents of this strategy for building basketball courts to address youth problems will argue that its a healthy way for these young people to channel their excessive energy in a positive manner, and law enforcement officials although many won't say publicly like the idea , because they can keep an eye on a large number of potential suspects especially if they are at one central location. On the flip side the opponents of such strategy will argue that not everyone wants to play basketball as a way to keep busy, and in some cases these courts can become trouble spots for all type of illegal transactions, and violence. Whose right whose wrong? As a basketball coach I know all of the benefits that are associated with playing the game, however as I wrote in a previous story (Sports Addiction) I also am very aware of the negative impacts of sports, particularly in the black community. I hear this statement all the time "The kids love basketball" no kidding, if you were bombarded with thousands of images and constantly brow beat with one option for success, would it be any surprise that you would have a passion for that field.

Pau Gasol Started Wearing Lakers Jerseys

Pau Gasol, who turned 28 this July, was born in Barcelona Spain. Paul is a 7'0 forward/center for the Los Angeles Lakers. As a youngster growing up in Spain, Pau played basketball with his two brothers, Marc and Adria. Marc is also a professional basketball player. In High School Pau played with his team called "Llor", and after that signed with C.B. Cornella. By the age of 16, Pau was playing for the Barcelona Junior National Team. He played in Europe from 1997-199, where his final season he averaged over 11 points and 5 rebounds playing in just 24 minutes a game.

Pau entered the 2001 NBA draft, and was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, who immediately traded his rights to Memphis, for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. As a Grizzles star for seven seasons, he still today holds the franchise record for games played, minutes played, field goals made- and attempted, free throws made and attempted. He also leads in offensive-defensive- and total rebounds, blocked shots, turnovers and points. Pretty much every stat in the Grizzles record book belongs to Gasol.

This past February Gasol was given one of the Lakers Jerseys, in a trade the Lakers Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, Marc Gasol and first round picks in 2008 and 2010. Pau decided to continue to wear his #16 jersey with the Lakers. He has worn that number his entire professional career. In his first start with the Lakers Gasol poured in 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Gasol played a month with the Lakers before rolling his ankle causing him to miss nearly a month of action. When Gasol returned, he played the last few games before starting the playoffs with the Lakers. Gasol was able to win his first career playoff game, and also advance to the NBA Finals- falling to the Boston Celtics.
